Text Repetition and Its Coherence: A Descriptive Study

Abstract

The study seeks to clarify the reality of repetition in textual analysis and its importance, as it is a linguistic phenomenon of most importance in the coherence of the text, which deserves to be studied to unveil its features and identify its truth and use, such as repetition of letters, nouns, verbs and sentences. The study discovered that there are different types of repetition intended to bring about coherence of sentences among them, as the repetition found in the Qur’anic text is of this kind. This study aims to employ contemporary linguistics in the study of the text, and to highlight the role of repetition in achieving coherence within the texts. The descriptive method is used in explaining what is related to this phenomenon by stating its purposes and the interrelationship between them. This study will be limited to clarifying the concept of repetition and its impact on the coherence of the text, as well as the values of textual repetition, its purpose, types, and some examples about repetition in textual analysis, and concluding with the most important findings of the research, amongst them: repetition has rhetorical values, for its acknowledgments and warnings, and the most important things about repetition in textual analysis is to achieve and strengthen textual coherence, and to employ the interrelationship between the component of the text, as well as the diversity of many patterns of repetition such as the repetition of the word itself, its synonyms, comprehensive word, as well as the noun.
